FAQ

What do I do if I think my child has a cavity?

If you suspect your child has a cavity, it's important to schedule a dental appointment as soon as possible. Early treatment can prevent the cavity from getting worse and causing more serious problems. In the meantime, try to keep the affected area clean by having your child brush gently and avoid sugary foods and drinks. Our team will examine your child's teeth, confirm if there is a cavity, and recommend the best treatment to restore their dental health.

Tips for brushing with children?

1. Start Early: Begin brushing when the first tooth appears with a soft-bristled brush 2. Make it Fun: Play your child’s favourite song or fun phone apps for brushing with children3. Teach Proper Technique: Show small, circular motions and brush all surfaces.4. Be a Role Model: Brush and floss your teeth together.5. Fluoride Toothpaste: Use a pea-sized amount once your child can spit out toothpaste (around age 3). Can also use flavoured toothpastes containing fluoride 6. Reward Good Habits: Use sticker charts or small rewards for consistent brushing.7. Encourage Independence: Let your child brush with supervision until they’re around 10 years old.8. Establish a Routine: Brush at the same times each day.9. Plaque disclosing tablets: can help parents and children visualise areas missed on teeth with brushing

What age should a child have their first dental check up?

The Australian Dental Association recommends that a child’s first dental visit should occur within six months of their first tooth appearing, and no later than their first birthday. This initial visit is generally quick, where we count your child's teeth and check for any early cavities or developmental concerns. It's primarily an opportunity for your child to build confidence in the dental chair and get accustomed to the dental environment. Following this, it is recommended to bring your child in for check-ups every six months to ensure their teeth and gums stay healthy.

Do Australian children get free dental?

Many Australian children are eligible for free dental care through the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS). This program provides up to $1,000 over two years for basic dental services like examinations, x-rays, cleanings, fillings, and extractions. Children aged 2-17 are eligible if their family receives certain government benefits. For more information or to check if your child is eligible, you can contact our practice or visit the Services Australia website.
